There is no better way to experience wild places than to put your boots on and your feet on the ground. Here are highlights of places you can go for hiking while at Naivasha West Beach Camp;
OUTDOOR
Mount Longonot
Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano on the southeastern side of Lake Naivasha, protected as Mount Longonot National Park by the Kenya Wildlife Service. Its name comes from a Maasai word meaning “mountain of many spurs”.
The trail climbs about 3.1 km from the park gate to the crater rim. From there you can continue on a 7.2 km loop around the rim, passing the summit at 2,776 m. The full round trip is roughly 13.5 km and takes most hikers 4 to 5 hours. Some sections are steep and loose underfoot, so wear good shoes.
From the rim you look down into a crater about 1.8 km wide, its floor covered in forest with small steam vents on the walls, and out across the Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha. On the lower slopes you may see zebra, buffalo, giraffe and eland.
OUTDOOR
Menengai Crater
Menengai Crater sits just north of Nakuru town, approximately 108 km from our camp or about two and a half hours’ drive, so plan it as a full-day trip. It is the largest volcanic caldera in Kenya, roughly 12 km by 8 km, and one of the largest in Africa.
From the viewpoint on the rim you get wide views over the caldera, Nakuru town and Lake Nakuru. The caldera floor is a rugged mix of old lava flows and forest. Hiking down to the floor and back up takes several hours and is best suited to fit hikers who start early.
